Chemistry, do we really need it?

I'm having to learn all of these compound names of chemicals for chemistry and mom says I will need to know this stuff (because I was complaining about it) for real life (college) but riddle me this, will I really need to know the compound symbol for trihydroxidooxidophosphorus phosphoric acid? I'm thinking no.
